The reflection of globalisation in fifth grade social studies course books

Abstract (EN)

Social Sciences is quite comprehensive in terms of content and scope. Similarly, the concept of globalization has not boundaries. In accordance with the developments experienced in the world, that is with the expansion of globalization, Social Sciences have also undergone continuous changes. In the present study, the aim was to examine the effects of globalization on the content and visual design of 5th grade Social Sciences textbooks used in public schools in the years 1978, 1990, and between 2001 and 2017. The 5th grade Social Sciences textbooks were analyzed by utilizing one of the qualitative methods, namely the document analysis method. The control list used to obtain data from the textbooks was established by the researcher as an outcome of the literature review. The study revealed that, of the education, political, science and technology, sociocultural and economic reflections of globalization, it was political reflection in the past, but science and technologyreflection today that emerged in the 5th grade Social Sciences textbooks. In all the textbooks that were examined, sociocultural reflection was found to be in the lead. It was also revealed that the impact of globalization had increased in the visuals within 5th grade Social Sciences textbooks from the past to the present. Hence, it is recommended that various studies be carried out on the impact of globalization on different subjects, different grade levels and different effects.
