Working for family owned businesses based on the perspectives of the daughters: A field research

Abstract (EN)

Family companies are the biggest contributors to the development of the national economy in the private sector. General trends in family businesses are to leave the business management to the next generation. In Family businesses, an open structure for all children is seen, however attitudes to girls and boys differ in families. Fathers leave sons the business because of distrust to daughters. However, daughters in family-run business are closer to success (Semerci, 2008: 89). As a result of studies in the literature, women in the family business have less formal role and fewer women are at the top management staff. In this context, the role of gender in everyday life effects women remaining them in back row in families. In other words, in the patriarchal structure of the family business hinders women to rise and be at the top management. Therefore, the definition of the situation of daughters in family businesses is important. Exploring the potential of daughters in family businesses is essential to provide more efficient integration in family business. Growth of family businesses to survive and create long-term objectives and shaping in addition to the recent strengthening of their position in families are also connected to the matter. The position and situation of daughters in the family business and increasing the power of investigation have revealed the need of research. In this study, daughters in family companies in Adana City, "their roles in Family business for assets of a successful resume and the importance of working in family firms, their situation, advantages-disadvantages to determine, the thoughts have been targeted to be obtained by the light of the structured interviews. Interviews with 19 people lasted in 3 months and collected data is analyzed. Structured interview form includes 6 titles. These companies respondent participation, family relationships, work relationships, work and family conflict, the powers-speed subject, ranked as basic information about the company and were analyzed under this heading. Results of the study, essential problems of daughters are gender discrimination, working more than men to be successful, unbalancing family and business lives because of long working hours. The biggest advantages of working for family business are to act freely and to have upper status easily in working place, flexible working hours, realizing own plans easily. It is seen that daughters working in the family companies joined in business with their own personal decisions. Daughters in the family companies, the father-daughter relationship has not changed after daughters started working in the family business. However, daughters and their relations with the non-family members (customers, suppliers, buyers and sellers) differed mostly positively. In the process of devolution, main problems between father and daughters are distrust and avoiding daughters to leave authority.
