The buildings and construction industry are responsible for almost 40% of energy- and process-related emissions. For this reason, the Paris Agreement announced that a 30% improvement in energy usage per sqm of buildings is needed until 2030 to reduce the high carbon emissions produced by buildings and the construction industry. Hence, the tendency in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is to reduce the resource consumption of buildings. At this point, there is a vital need to retrofit the existing buildings sustainably to fulfill the global climate targets described in the Paris Agreement. The research objective of this study is to (1) retrofit a five-story residential building based on the LEED v4.1 Operations and Maintenance (O+M) and (2) compare the resource consumption and carbon emission release of sustainable retrofitted buildings and conventional existing buildings. Based on the LEED v4.1 O+M, nine alternative scenarios are used in the study to reduce the building's current energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In this scope, energy, water, and lighting performance, as well as the carbon emission production rate of the building, are calculated via DesignBuilder for each scenario. The results reveal that each retrofitting method has a varied effect on lowering energy consumption and CO2 emissions in existing buildings. The combined scenario reduces the annual CO2 emission in the existing building from 34437.89 kg to 16668.9 kg, representing a 51% decrease in CO2 emissions. The findings of this study show that combining numerous retrofit methods can save up to 50% of energy in Tabriz-climate residential buildings. The results of this research will contribute to the AEC industry and literature by indicating the design process and value of sustainable retrofits for residential buildings based on LEED v4.1 Operations and Maintenance. Practitioners in sustainable construction projects and researchers focusing on green buildings could benefit from the results of this research.
