The effect of manual lymphatic drainage on edema, pain, and quality of life after liposuction

Liposuction is a widely performed surgical procedure aimed at removing unwanted adipose tissue from the body to achieve both aesthetic and functional improvements; however, complications such as edema, pain, and functional loss are common. Manual Lymphatic Drainageis a specialized physiotherapy technique applied with gentle and rhythmic massage movements to enhance lymphatic flow, reduce edema, and support circulation and the immune system. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Manuel Lymphatic Drainage applied after liposuction surgery on edema, pain, and quality of life. Volunteers aged between 20 and 50 who had undergone liposuction were included in the study; edema was assessed by circumferential measurements, pain by the Visual Analog Scale, quality of life by the Short Form-36 (SF-36), and daily living activities by the Barthel Index. Following the application of a standard Manuel Lymphatic Drainage protocol, participants demonstrated an average reduction of 2–4 cm in circumferential measurements, an average decrease of 3–4 points in Visual Analog Scala scores, significant improvements in the physical function, pain, and general health subscales of SF-36, and increased Barthel Index scores (p<0.05). Regional analyses revealed that edema regressed more rapidly in areas close to the surgical site, and the development of fibrotic tissue was also markedly reduced. The findings indicate that Manuel Lymphatic Drainage is effective in reducing edema, alleviating pain, improving quality of life, and enhancing functional capacity after liposuction. In conclusion, the correct application of Manuel Lymphatic Drainage in the postoperative period accelerates the recovery process, reduces the risk of complications, and supports patients' return to daily activities; therefore, its routine inclusion in postoperative rehabilitation protocols after liposuction is recommended.
