The relationship between subjective well being and self compassion in high scholl students

The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between subjective well-being and self-compassion in high school students. The population of the study consists of high school students and the study group consist of randomly selected 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students from Metin Çiviler Anatolian High School, Baraj Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, Antalya Barosu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, Aldemir Atilla Konuk Anatolian High School, Akdeniz Anatolian High School and Muhittin Mustafa Böcek Anatolian High School. The research was conducted with total of 649 high school students, 337 female and 312 male, in the 2018-2019 academic year. The data were collected by using "Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale", "Self Compassion Scale" and "Personal Information Form". T-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and stepwise regression analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the findings of the research, the significant difference between schools on positive emotion subscale of Subjective Well-Being is existed. According to the perceptions of income status, the subjective well-being scores of the students who perceive their families as middle income were higher than the scores of students who perceived their income as low income and for the satisfaction with relationships with family subscale, students perceiving their families income as middle and high were higher scores than those perceived their families as low income. In addition, the positive emotions, life satisfaction and satisfaction with the relationship with important others subscales scores of the students who perceive their families as middle income were higher than those of the students who perceived their families as low income. According to the perceived academic achievement, the students who perceived themselves as successful and moderately successful were found to have higher scores (subjective well-being, satisfaction with family relations, positive emotions, satisfaction with important others, and self-compassion scores) than those perceived as unsuccessful. In addition, for the life satisfaction subscale, the scores of the students who perceived themselves as successful at the medium level were higher than the students who perceived themselves as unsuccessful. It can be said that self-compassion has a moderate positive relationship with subjective well-being, positive emotions and life satisfaction, however self-compassion has a weak positive correlation with other subscales of the subjective wellbeing (satisfaction with family relationships and satisfaction in relationships with important others). 23% of total variance in subjective well-being is explained by self-compassion, 2% by income status perception, and 1% by perceived academic achievement.
