Investigation of the effect on academic motivation of problemed internet use in high school students

The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive effect on academic motivation of problematic internet usage in high-school students. At the same time, the differences between academic motivation in terms of gender, school type and grade level were investigated. In this research, a relational and descriptive survey model was used to examine the relationship between problematic internet use and academic motivation. The sample of the study consisted of 640 girls and 280 boys totally 640 students attending the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades of Science High School, Social Sciences High School and Anatolian High Schools located in the central districts of Erzurum in 2017-2018 academic year. Personal Information Form, Problematic Internet Usage Scale-E and Academic Motivation Scale were used as data collection tools. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Structural Equation Model (SEM), independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc LSD analysis were used on the data obtained during the application process. The analyzes were performed through LISREL 8.80 and SPSS 21.00. In the research, .05 significance level was used. It was concluded that there was a negative significant relationship between problematic internet use and sub-dimensions of academic motivation scales, and problematic internet use positively predicted academic motivation. It was concluded that there was no significant difference between gender and self-transcendence of academic motivation, but there was a significant difference between using knowledge and discovery sub-dimensions. There was a difference between academic motivation and grade level. It is seen that the students who are educated in Social Sciences High School have higher scores than the students who are educated in Science and Anatolian High School in terms of using knowledge which is the sub-dimension of academic motivation. In addition, the students who continue their education in Anatolian and Social Sciences High School in the discovery of the sub-dimension of the academic motivation of students who continue their education in Science High School has reached a higher score average difference.
