Examining the social profiles of substance addicted adolescents

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between personal, social, family and school factors, crime rates and substance addiction behaviors of substance addicted adolescents. Participants included 713 male addicted adolescents who seek help for addiction treatment from Oya Bahadır Yüksel Rehabilitation Center in the years between 2013-2020. Patient Anamnesis Form" prepared by the experts working in the center was used as the data collection tool. For data analysis, the "Two-Way Chi-Square Test" was used to examine the family, street, crime and school factors associated with adolescents' substance addiction and the relationships between these factors. For the main purpose of the study, "Binary Logistic Regression Analysis" was used to determine the relevant significant predictive variables that increase the probability of street life experience, criminal history, school dropout, committing suicide, and physical harm. Findings revealed that age, father-adolescent communication, school dropout and work experience predicted having street life experience; age, school dropout, street life experience, addiction history of family and crime history of family predicted crime; work experience, addiction history of family and crime history of family predicted school dropout; thinking about suicide and physical harm predicted the probability of commiting suicide; and finally, age, street life experience and having been in prison predicted the probability of physical harm of addicted adolescents. The results were discussed in the light of the relevant literature and recommendations for future research and implications were provided.
