Examination of individuals with substance use disorder in terms of dysfunctional attitudes, depression and anxiety levels: A comparative study

This study aimed to compare dysfunctional attitudes, depression and anxiety levels of the individuals with substance use disorder and those who did not use substance. For this purpose, causal comparative research design was used. The participants included 60 individuals being treated at Ahmet Şireci ASATEC unit of 25 Aralık State Hospital (study group) and 60 individuals who do not use substance (control group). Their age ranged from 18 to 60. Research data were collected through Personal Information Form, Abbreviated Turkish form of Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS-R-TR), Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Addiction Profile Index (BAPI)'s Short Form. Data were analysed by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Shapiro Wilk test, Independent Samples Group T test, Pearson Correlation Method, ANOVA and Multi Linear Regression Analysis. The results indicated that dysfunctional attitudes of individuals with substance use disorder determined by DAS-R were higher than the average scores of the individuals who do not use substance. When the anxiety and depression levels presented by Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory compared, we found that depression (average: 37.35) and anxiety (average: 27.23) levels of individuals with substance use disorder had significantly higher average scores in than those who do not use substance (BDI score average: 7.20, BAI score average: 5.52).
