Space-identity-identification: Examples from Trabzon streets

In Turkey, the urban environments are changing rapidly in an undesirable way that creates multidimentional problems are structu ral, spatial, esteti cs, cultural, psyhological, social, economic and transportational, all of which impose further problems on people who live in urban areas, such as psycho-social, cultural and biologic deprivations, maladjustment, aliency, unsatisfaciton, weak social relations etc. The main theme of this study, is the physical environment and the living quality which are exist together and mutually influnce to each other. In other words, this study will deal with the living space and living quality which together are formed by the physical and social environmental quality. The subjects of space-identity- identification, are examined on a small scale space (perceviable space), which can be called "street space", evaluating physical space, social space, socio-pschological and pscho-analitical aspects in terms of space requirements and dimensions of perception and from view points of people who are perceptionist and who live in the street. In the first chapter, the problem and the methodology of the study are introduced. In second chapter, the theoretical and explanatory models and approaches are given in relation to the mutual influence between the physical and social environment. In third chapter, the subject of identity, local identity and identification the process of perception and the steps of perception are examined in relation to space bound requirements. The fourth chapter, covers the field survey, which consists of three main steps. These steps and their contents are: 1. Typological analysis: Typology, the general structure of types, the analysis of physical space elements and their contribution to environment. 2. The subjective perception and evaluation: The way in which an environment is used and percieved by the people who live in, to determine the most influential factors and criterias, physical and social identity and their subjective evaluation. Evaluation and conclusion: The explanation of space formation in relation to identity and identification of residence-garden open space, the in relation to residence-garden-street/public open space, view point of identity and identification, the quality of physical and social environment-living space and space to be lived in-and their applicabilities under present day conditions. The information about these subjects are gathered by observation, intensive interview and determining the present state of spaces by measuring, photographing etc. The fifth chapter covers the general conslusion and proposals.
