Abstract (EN)

Due to the increase in human population day by day, the amount of waste generated from the foods that consumed increases in the same direction. Today, with the increasing population and developing technology, the waste that is generated has become an important issue for countries. For a sustainable waste management process, waste collection, transfer, pre-treatment, and recycling issues should be analyzed in detail. Therefore, countries have aimed to apply appropriate recycling techniques by considering the characteristics of their location and multiple selection criteria. As a conclusion, meticulous work is required to determine the appropriate waste facility location. The aim of this thesis is to determine the appropriate location for the mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant in Istanbul. MBT provides that wastes become suitable for recycling by passing through the necessary processes before recycling. A pre-treatment facility is required in the Anatolian region of Istanbul, in order to increase the efficiency of the waste recycling facility. Therefore, an integrated fuzzy multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model is developed for the MBT location selection problem. The proposed method comprises of geographic information system (GIS), fuzzy best worst method (BWM) and hierarchical fuzzy MCDM approach. First, alternatives for the site selection problem were determined using expert opinions and web-based GIS. Second, the criteria determined for the literature and expert opinions were weighted using the fuzzy best worst method. Finally, most suitable alternative was determined using hierarchical fuzzy MCDM approach.
