Investigation of usage of marble processing plant waste in precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) production

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the precipitated calcium carbonate production was studied from waste marble powder. For this purpose; previously waste marble powder obtained from processing facilities were calcined, then hydroxide was produced by dissolving in water calcium and finally, calcium carbonate was precipitated by putting into reaction with carbon dioxide gas. In experimental studies, parameters such as the calcination temperature, the molarity of solution and the calcium oxide dissolution time of and the effect of NaOH catalyst to precipitation time were investigated. Work produced at the end of calcium carbonate products; particle size analysis, whiteness, XRF, XRD and SEM analyzes were performed. As a result of experimental studies; 950oC was calculated to be the most suitable calcination temperature, whereas the most suitable solution molarity was 1M, ambient temperature 25°C, the optimal solubilization time of 5 minutes, the autoclave pressure 0.5 bar, and most suitable deposition time was found to be 5 minutes. According to analysis results, particle size of product is d50 = 2,27 m, product phase is CaCO3, crystal structure of product is rhombohedra and product purity is 97.35% CaCO3. The whiteness and brightness values of PCC produce are 91.28 and 98.20 respectively that they are higher than standard whiteness and brightness values. In addition, it was observed that NaOH catalyst did not affect to precipitation time, but had a positive effect to the growth of crystal.
