Abstract (EN)

Architecture is a branch that has an interdisciplinary feature that manifests itself in both theory and practice. The architect, who has to find solutions to problems, makes use of various branches of science and art such as philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, painting, and literature in order to design in accordance with its function. These disciplines contribute to the phenomenon of architecture by affecting architecture directly and indirectly. The concept of place, which is the common point of both disciplines, is handled over the places in Orhan Pamuk's novel "Kar" through semiotic theory in this study, which examines the relationship between architecture and literary art, emphasizing the interdisciplinary feature of architecture. The thesis study primarily has touched on the relationship between literature and architecture and has examined the common elements of these two branches of art. Then, the conceptual framework of the thesis has been established by discussing the definition, history, principles, theorists, and approaches of semiotic theory. Later, the life of Orhan Pamuk, one of the important writers of Turkish and world literature who is selected as a sample within the scope of the thesis, his literary personality, his works, the place setup he worked on in his novels, and a summary of the novel "Kar" have been included. A semiotic reading of the architectural spaces depicted in Orhan Pamuk's novel "Kar" and highlighted by the author has been made by using literary indicators. The interpretation of these spatial indicators has been analyzed through the tables created by using the semiotics principles that Ronald Barthes classified under four headings. The main purpose of the study is to make sense of the message, which is given in the mind of the reader that the author wants to convey, sometimes explicitly or implicitly, through the architectural indicators in the novel. Within the scope of the study, what these architectural indicators are, how they are included in the text, and what semantic variations they determine are investigated.
