Nasal mucociliary in patients diagnosed with migraine measuring clearance

Abstract (EN)
Migraine is a chronic disease with a high incidence affecting the quality of life and is more common in women. The high incidence of odor auras in this disease has aroused our curiosity aboutthe changesin nasal mucociliary clearance activity, which directly affectssmell and taste functions, compared to healthy patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate nasal mucociliary clearance (NMC) activity in migraine patients. A study group consisting of 99 patients between the ages of 18-65 who did not have any nasal and paranasal sinus disease, who had not undergone surgery or trauma, who did not have any chronic disease other than migraine, and who did notsmoke, and a control group consisting of 100 patients who met the same premises but were not migraine patients were included in the study. Saccharin, which has no side effects, was used in our study and the tests performed were non-invasive. The saccharin preparation was placed in the anterior lower part of the inferiorturbinate and the time elapsed until the patient's sense of taste occurred was recorded in minutes. 30 minutes -1 hour before the test, patients were asked not to blow their nose, not to wash their nose, not to use medication and not to be in an environment where smoking was common, and the patients were monitored. As a result of our study, no statistically significant difference was found between the control and study groups. If we look at the age groups, the NMK period was significantly shortened in the study group in the 18-30 age group and 51-65 age group (p<0.05). It was observed that the nasal mucociliary clearance period increased as age increased in the control group, but age did not affect the nasal mucociliary clearance period in the study group. As a result, it was noted thatthe NMK period was prolonged depending on age in healthy patients without a migraine diagnosis, did not change depending on age in migraine patients and shortened in patients with migraine who were between 18-30 years old and 51-65 years old. As a result of our study, in summary, the presence of migraine does not affect the nasal mucociliary clearance period statistically significantly.
