The place of furniture design courses in undergraduate interior architecture education

Interior architecture education encompasses an analytical process that includes various disciplines and fosters creativity. It aims to meet needs by emphasizing interior space and furniture designs in lifestyles. Furnitur which is the one of the most crucial aspects of interior space analysis, guides the design approaches observed in the educational process. This study identifies the place of furniture design courses in undergraduate interior architecture education. The study is limited to state schools which is offering interior architecture education. The furniture courses included in interior architecture education form the scope of the study, aiming to determine the operational process of furniture design courses in education. A literature review was conducted using information obtained from the course information packages of universities. Utilizing qualitative research methods, an interview form was prepared for course instructors based on the contents of the furniture design courses. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculty members teaching furniture design courses. The furniture lessons included in the course information packages and the opinions of the faculty members involved in the teaching process were analyzed. In this context, the current status of furniture design courses in interior architecture education and the applied teaching methods were examined. Studies aimed at increasing the efficiency of education were discussed, and emphasis was placed on the importance of comprehensive furniture education, with suggestions for improving the process.
