Analyzing burnout syndrome of accountants : cases in Elazığ and Tunceli

In today's modernizing and ısolated socıeties where individualism has come to the forefront, it is seen unfortunately that there is depletion in all ages and occupational groups. Physical exhaustion, long-term fatigue, helplessness and hopelessness are seen in people who are exposed to intense emotional demands due to occupational bumout job and who are constantly working face to face with other people. Bumout is a workplace product and a situation with very serious individual and organizational harms. Exhaustion observed more intensely in stressful occupations, where role uncertainities and role conflicts are experienced, especially in face to face communication with people. Those who deal with the accounting profession are among the most difficult jobs to perform due to long and tiring working hours, limited holiday opportunities, shortage of wages, frequently changing legislation, unfair competition, and society's point of view. These special features of the accounting profession increase the likelihood of exhaustion in employees. In this theoretical framework, this study examines whether Professional accountants have experienced burnout syndrome and whether there is a difference in their burnout levels in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. Statistical analyzes were performed on the data collected from the Maslach Burnout Inventory from 127 professional accountants in Elazığ and Tunceli provinces. From the sub-dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, it was concluded that the "Emotional Exhaustion" and "Desensitization" dimensions were high and the sub-dimension of the "Reduction in Sense of Personal Achievement" subscale was low. In short, it shows that there is burnout in accounting professionals. In the analysis of differences in socio-demographic variables, it was observed that there was no difference in terms of gender, marital status and education levels of the participants. However, it was observed that the older panticipants had more exhaustion than the younger ones.
