A scholarly examination of Muhit magazine (1928-1933)

Muhit magazine is a periodical that began publication between 1 November 1928 and May 1933, emerging in conjunction with the Alphabet Reform. Accordingly, while the first issue was printed in the old script, the second issue, released on 30 November 1928, appeared in both the old and the new scripts; subsequent issues were published exclusively in the new alphabet. Until its forty-ninth issue, the magazine identified itself as a "Illustrated Monthly Family Journal," and from the forty-ninth issue onward, it adopted the title "Illustrated Monthly Family and School Journal." The first forty-six issues of Muhit were published in eighty pages, while the following nine issues consisted of forty-eight pages. The magazine, which appeared in a total of fifty-five issues, each notably voluminous, remained active in the press world until May 1933. It was founded and published by Ahmet Cevat Emre, a linguist, translator, writer, and politician. The primary purpose of the periodical was to promote and disseminate the values of the Republic within society. In this respect, it may be argued that the magazine sought to cultivate a modern, informed, and cultured Turkish family structure. Muhit featured a wide range of literary forms including poetry, short stories, plays, criticism, memoirs, interviews, reportage, travel writing, biographies, autobiographies, essays, aphorisms, and humorous pieces as well as articles on diverse subjects such as politics, economics, sports, music, education, family life, fashion, health, architecture, and technological developments.
