Investigation of the usability of Phanechate chrysproium as a model live for evaluation of toxicity of rare earth element cerium

Abstract (EN)

Rare earth elements are widely used in many technological fields today. Ceium, one of the rare elements we used in our study, is the first metal discovered among the rare earth elements. Due to the widespread use of these elements, it has opened a door to investigate the negative effects that may occur on the environment and living things. In this study, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione S-Transferase (GST) activities and Glutathione (GSH) and Thiobarbiturate reactive substances (TBARS) levels of Phanerochaete chrysosporium exposed to different doses of rare earth element cerium were determined. SOD activity was statistically significantly decreased in all treatment groups at 24 and 48 hours compared to the control. (p0.05). Compared with the control group, CAT activities in all groups exposed to different doses of Cerium decreased significantly (p <0.05) after 24 hours, but the difference between the groups after 48 hours was found to be statistically insignificant (p>0.05). Compared with the control group, GST activities increased statistically at 24 hours in all groups exposed to different Cerium doses, but decreased significantly after 48 hours of administration. Compared with the control, GSH levels decreased in all treatment groups after 24 and 48 hours. TBARS levels were found to be increased in all treatment groups compared to the control group after 48 hours (p <0.05). The results obtained from the study showed that Phanerochaete chrysosporium can be used as a model in the study of the toxic effect of cerium.
