The mediating role of fear of missing out and social media addiction on the relationship between narcissism and phubbing

Abstract (EN)

This research aims to examine the mediating role of fear of missing out and social media addiction in the relationships between narcissism and phubbing. A total of 383 participants (274 Female, 109 Male) aged between 18 and 73 attended the study. During the data collection phase, the Sociodemographic Information Form, Narcissistic Personality İnvontery, Social Media Addiction Scale- Adult Form, Sociootelism Scale and General Fear of Missing Out Scale were given as online forms. The research finding was performed by using Social Sciences Statistics Package Program (SPSS 26). Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between narcissism and phubbing, Mann Whitney U-test was used to determine the gender differences and the PROCESS extension was used for mediator effect analysis, it was determined that there is a significant relationship between narcissism and phubbing. The sequential mediating effect of fear of missing out and social media addiction was found to be significant in the relationships between narcissism and phubbing. The findings of the study were discussed, suggestions were made for future studies.
