An examination of sensory processing, cognitive functions and occupational participation in individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A comparative study

This study aimed to examine sensory processing skills, cognitive functions, and occupational participation in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A total of 52 participants were included in the study: 26 individuals diagnosed with OCD (Group 1) and 26 individuals without an OCD diagnosis (Group 2). Sensory processing skills, cognitive abilities, and occupational participation were assessed using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, Lowenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA), and the Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool (MOHOST). At the end of the study, it was found that individuals with OCD had significantly lower scores compared to those without OCD in the following areas: motor processing, activity level, auditory processing, sensory avoidance, and sensory sensitivity in the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile; visual-motor organization, thinking ability, and attention-concentration in LOTCA; and communication-interaction skills and environmental scores in MOHOST (p<0.05). The results of the study indicate that sensory processing skills, cognitive functions, and occupational participation are negatively affected in individuals with OCD. This study highlights the importance of sensory processing, cognitive functions, and occupational participation in coping with OCD and provides new insights into the development of new approaches in these areas.
