The relationship between comorbidity and obesity in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

In this research, the aim of the study was to determine the frequency of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in persons admitted to a hospital and to determine the relationship between OSAS and obesity and comorbidity. This research is cross-sectional type. A total of 684 persons who were admitted to the Sleep Apnea Unit of Ezine State Hospital of Çanakkale Province between July 2017 and June 2018 and who underwent polysomnography. In this retrospective study, the data were obtained from the archive records. The mean age of the study group was 49.93±12.90 and 68.7% was male. 62.0% of the group was obese and 98.8% had chronic or systemic disease and 51.9% had at least one comorbid disease. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis: the probability of OSAS being seen in participants was higher in males, at later age, alcohol users, in those with daytime sleepiness, pre-obeses and obese, comorbidity in the variables more than the reference categories. The multivariate logistic regression analysis with reference to Adjusted R² has indicated that the OSAS frequency has been positively correlated with the BMI and comorbidity. The probability of OSAS was 2.087 times (OR, 95% CI: 1.126-3.869) higher in pre-obeses groups compared to those with normal BMI 4.470 times (2.350-8.504) in obese Class I, 6.880 times (3.345-14.150) in obese Class II, 31.572 times (9.883-100.857) higher in obese class III. The probability of OSAS was 2.176 times (1.383-3.424) higher in patients with had two diseases, and 3.395 times (1.907-6.042) higher in patients with had three or more diseases than without comorbidity.
