Abstract (EN)

This thesis examines the impact of different early childhood education models on the perception of architectural space. This thesis investigates the impact of different preschool education models on architectural spatial perception. Early childhood education plays a critical role in the cognitive, emotional, and social development of individuals. The educational models implemented during this formative period not only shape children's learning processes but also influence their interaction with the physical environment. In this context, the design of educational spaces holds significant importance for the pedagogical, psychological, and social development of children. The study examines four different education models: Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, and High Scope. However, the primary focus of the research is centered on the Montessori education model. The Montessori approach offers a learning environment that supports individual development, encourages sensory experiences, and provides opportunities for autonomous exploration. Accordingly, the thesis thoroughly addresses spatial requirements of the Montessori model, including classroom layout, material usage, color selection, and furniture arrangement. The research was conducted through both international and local case studies. Six different Montessori preschools from around the world were analyzed, alongside two preschools from Gaziantep, Turkey. During field visits, architectural plans were obtained, photographs were taken, and interviews with school administrators were conducted. The aim of the study is to reveal the relationship between spatial arrangements in various preschool education models and children's educational experiences. In this scope, the effects of spatial organization on the learning process were analyzed. The findings demonstrate that environments designed in accordance with the educational model support children's cognitive development, enhance their self-confidence, and stimulate their creativity. This study clarifies the relationship between architectural design and pedagogical approaches in preschool education facilities and provides significant insights for designing more effective and developmentally enriched learning environments. The thesis aims to raise awareness of the role of architecture in the success of early childhood education and to contribute to the academic literature in this field.
