Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Aim: Primary glomerulonephritis is an important cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) such as dialysis and transplantation. Kidney biopsy is the gold standard method for diagnosis. In this study, our aim is to examine the histopathological distribution and clinical features of primary glomerular diseases diagnosed in our region. Materials and Methods: In this study, 358 patients diagnosed with primary glomerular disease by biopsy between 2016-2021 in Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Nephrology were retrospectively analyzed. Transplant kidney biopsies were excluded from the study. Results: In our study, 222 (62%) of 358 patients were male and 136 (38%) were female. The mean age was 47.77±15.36 years, and the most common reason for admission was nephrotic syndrome (43.3%). The most common histopathological diagnosis was MGN (52.3%) in patients presenting with nephrotic syndrome. The most common histopathological diagnosis was MGN (29.3%). Considering the age distribution, the most common cause was IgAN (35.7%) between the ages of 18-40, and the most common cause was MGN (50.9%) in those aged >65 years. There is a significant increase in the rate of crescentic glomerulonephritis in advanced age. Discussion and Conclusion: Our study is among the most comprehensive studies reflecting the data of our region. The results we obtained are generally compatible with the literature of our country and the world, but there are some regional and national differences. As a result of our study, it has been shown that kidney biopsies are generally performed on symptomatic patients with high creatinine levels. For this reason, it has been shown that the indications for kidney biopsy should be well known not only as a nephrologist but also as a general internal medicine and family medicine specialist, and patients should be sent to nephrology clinics without being symptomatic.
