Investigation of leisure time restrictions of dormitory students in secondary education institutions

Leisure activities are considered as a reward for individuals' working times, and especially play a significant role in the physical, mental, and social development of individuals, particularly those in the developmental stage. Therefore, this research aims to examine the leisure constraints of boarding students in secondary education institutions from various perspectives. The population of the study consists of students staying in boarding schools affiliated with secondary education institutions in Elazığ province. The sample group consists of 422 students staying in dormitories of secondary education institutions affiliated with Elazığ city center. The "Leisure Constraints Scale Short Form," developed by Gürbüz and colleagues, was used as the data collection tool in the research. The leisure constraints of the participants were examined in terms of gender, type of school, grade level, family income status, and regular exercise status variables. SPSS 22.0 program was used for statistical analysis. It was determined that the data showed normal distribution, and parametric tests such as Independent Sample T-test and One-Way ANOVA tests were applied. According to the research results, it was found that female students, students of science high schools in terms of the type of school variable, and students with a family income status between 10,000-15,000 TL had significantly more leisure constraints. No significant differences were found in terms of grade level and regular exercise status. As a result, it was found that boarding students; students of science high schools compared to other high schools, students with lower income levels compared to higher ones, and females compared to males had more leisure constraints. In line with the findings of the study, it was determined that the leisure constraints scores of boarding students in secondary education institutions participating in the study were at a moderate level, with an average score of 45,57.
