Examination of the activities in science textbooks in terms of life skills

Abstract (EN)
In the Science Curriculum, it is aimed to raise all individuals as science literate individuals. Science literate individuals; They are individuals who research, question, make logical decisions, solve problems, are self-confident, open to cooperation and communication, entrepreneurial, innovative thinking, and lifelong learners with the awareness of sustainable development. In order to raise science literate individuals, it is very important to bring life skills, which is one of the 21st century skills, to students. This study was carried out to evaluate the level of inclusion of life skills in the activities in the secondary school science textbooks. In the study, document analysis method was used and 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade school textbooks were examined. As a data collection tool, a life skills assessment rubric, which was prepared and developed by the researcher using the literature, and used. Each activity in the science textbooks was analyzed separately throuhg the created rubric. The findings were graphed separately for each grade level, with mean and percentage values. As a result, 50% of the activities in the 5th grade science textbook and 52% of the activities in the 6th grade science textbook were found to have life skills. It has been determined that 55% of the activities in the 7th grade science textbook and 60% of the activities in the 8th grade science textbook have life skills. In addition, it was concluded that 127 activities included in the science textbooks at all grade levels were aimed at gaining life skills at a total rate of 54%.
