Reflections from the sinecal quadrant experiences of secondary mathematics teachers

The purpose of this research is to examine the pre-service mathematics teachers' explanations of mathematical operations on the sinecal quadrant and their views on the use of the sinecal quadrant in mathematics education. In this study, which was prepared for this purpose, the case study method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The research group of the study consists of 51 teacher candidates studying in the second year of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Elementary Mathematics Teaching in 2022-2023. Appropriate sampling method was used to determine the research group. The data of the research were collected through a written interview form consisting of open-ended questions. Content analysis, one of the qualitative data analysis methods, was used in the analysis of the collected data. As a result of the analysis, 7 themes and 26 categories belonging to these themes were formed. When the findings obtained from the research were examined, it was seen that the pre-service teachers had problems in explaining some concepts related to the operations performed on the rubric board, in relational understanding or in modeling these operations. Pre-service teachers generally stated that the sinecal quadrant would be useful in lessons in the context of the history of mathematics and that it could be used in the teaching of many mathematical concepts.
