Investigation of the relationship between map literacy and visual literacy skills of secondary school students

The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between map literacy and visual literacy skills of 5th, 6th and 7th grade secondary school students. The research was conducted using a relational survey model, with a sample of 225 students studying in four secondary schools in the central district of Adıyaman province. The "Map Literacy Scale", developed within the scope of the research, and the "Visual Literacy Scale", developed by Karaçam (2020), were used as data collection tools. As a result of the data obtained within the scope of the problem status and sub-problems of the research, it was determined that the map literacy levels of secondary school students were high; this level did not show a significant difference according to gender and class level. When the map literacy levels of secondary school students were examined according to their use of technological tools when searching for directions, addresses or locations in daily life, a significant difference was found in favor of students who used technological tools. In addition, it was determined that the visual literacy levels of secondary school students were high; this level did not show any significant difference according to gender, class level, and the use of technological tools while searching for directions, addresses or locations in daily life. Finally, it was revealed that the relationship between secondary school students' map literacy and visual literacy skills was positive and high. Suggestions were made in line with the results of the study.
