Abstract (EN)

In general, the Ottoman Empire was a state whose economy was based on agriculture and whose lands were suitable for agriculture due to its geopolitical location and exported the products they produced. However, over time, various negative situations such as the deterioration of the fief system, the adoption of the private property concept and the change in trade routes caused deterioration and some disruptions in agriculture. Some measures were taken to eliminate these conditions affecting agriculture and production. The changes in administrative, political, economic, cultural and social fields that started with the Tanzimat period were also experienced in agriculture. The agricultural incentive policies and agricultural policies implemented during the Tanzimat period are considered as important steps taken to revitalize agriculture and to put it into a certain system. Accordingly, the activities of the Council of Agriculture and Industry, the start of the Assembly of Agriculture and Industry (Majlis-i Umur-u Nafia), the opening of agricultural schools in various regions of the country during the reign of Abdülhamid II, the establishment of sample fields, and the sending of students abroad for agricultural education in the following period can be counted among the improvements made in the field of agriculture. In the early 20th century, World War I (1914-1918), which caused serious damage in every field in the Ottoman Empire, led to the disruption of agriculture, which constituted a large part of the state's economic income sources, and caused the state to experience a great financial crisis. Agricultural newspapers and magazines published in large numbers during this period made noteworthy publications aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector, which was in a difficult situation in the country, and increasing production and quality. These press-publication activities in the field of agriculture and its subsidiary branches were one of the important steps taken to raise the awareness of farmers, to announce and implement new agricultural methods, and thus to develop agriculture. From this point of view, this thesis analyzes the copies of the Farmers' Association Magazine in the Hakkı Tarık Us Library, the National Library, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Atatürk Library, and the documents related to the Farmers' Association and its magazine in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey State Archives Directorate. The purpose of the publication of the Farmers' Association's journal, informing and raising awareness of farmers, new agricultural methods, agricultural tools, the place of agriculture in the development of the country and articles on the development of animal husbandry are discussed, and the importance given to the development of agriculture in the late Ottoman period is revealed on the axis of the journal.
