Abstract (EN)
In this study, the effects of the application of authentic learning approaches on academic success, retention of knowledge, attitude to the lesson and 21st century learning and innovation skills were researched. Mixed method pattern was used in the research. The quantitative data of the study were collected by using quasi-experimental design with pre-test/post-test with control group. After experimental process, the social studies' academic success of students in control or experimental group increased. There weren't statistically significant difference between either group's post-test points; however average increase at points of students in experimental group was higher than the average increase of students in control group. Significant difference at retention test points was found in favour of experimental group. As a result of experimental process, while changes of attitude of students towards social studies subject was found statistically significant for students in experimental group, it wasn't found significant for the students in control group. As a result of the experimental process, it was found that there were no significant changes in the 21st century learning and innovation skill levels of the students in the experimental and control groups compared to the pre-experimental process despite the increase in points. Although the scores of the students in the experimental group were higher than the control group, these increases were not found statistically significant. The qualitative data of the research showed that students acquired various skills and values from the social studies curriculum during process. Authentic learning process gave the students opportunities for doing research, solving problems, creativity, making a decision, cooperation, communication; chart; diagram and interpretation, being able to use Turkish language well and effectively, social participation, empathy, sensitivity, saving, having responsibility, patriotism and scientific. As the lessons picked out different perspectives and ideas and this help them to acquire main skills to solve similar problems they may face in real life, students found lessons beneficial which were attributed with daily life. Students evaluated the process as getting information, being conscious, socializing, increasing self-confidence and acquiring skills to future. Learnings in process authentic learning were defined as learning by doing, learning with experience, learning by fun, by imagining, by wandering.
