Abstract space productions in cinema within the context of the dialectic of essence and form

Throughout history, people's efforts to decipher their existence and their environment have been based on the relationship established between what and how of the existence, that is, the relationship of essence and form. For this reason, every being, every work of art, every architectural work and every film become evident in this union of essence and form. Abstraction is a dialectical process that establishes the connection between essence and form, between abstract and concrete; it is the deciphering of the relationship as a cognitive action. Therefore, it is an integral part of the interpretation process. Abstraction is also a method that is often used in architecture and in many artistic disciplines, in order to reach the essence and reflection of the essence. The use of this method imposes different semantic and formal qualities on the object. Abstraction in cinema, just like in architecture, is one of the important methods that establishes the connection between the meaning and form of an art work. In this context, the production of space in cinema also consists of some processes that contain abstraction at many stages. Considering the common points and increasing interactions of cinema and architecture, it seems that abstract cinematic space has become a wide field of experience in the exploration of the meaning and formal relationships of space. For this reason, the study focuses on abstract space productions in cinema in the context of the dialectic of essence and form. Krzysztof Kieślowski is a director who has created his own unique poetic style with the different and rich abstraction techniques he uses. In this context, the director's films "Three Colors: Blue (1993)", "Three Colors: White (1994)" and "Three Colors: Red (1994)" were selected as examples due to their appropriateness in the context of comparing their essence and formal elements. Within this framework, it is aimed that the films of the "Three Colors" series will be analyzed and compared with the visual and auditory content analysis techniques within the framework of the film essence-form-abstraction method created specifically for the study, and thus to examine the essence and formal relationships of the resulting abstract spaces.
