Abstract (EN)
The increased use of xenobiotics without sufficient testing, has affected human health and natural resources negatively. Ames is a test system which can detect mutations caused by xenobiotics at cellular level. In this study, the mutagenic effect of paraben was investigated by the Ames Salmonella/microsome test. Mutachromoplate Test Kit, Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100 strains were used in experiments. The mutagenic activity was screened in two groups with or without S9 metabolic activation. According to the results positive colony count was found higher than those spontaneous positive colony count among all of the concentrations and as well as under the conditions of with and without S9 (p>0.05). Positive colony count were increased with increasing the paraben concentration. For TA 98 and TA 100 the maximum positive colony count was observe at a level of 100 μg/plate paraben. In conclusion, it was shown that paraben was mutagenic for TA 98 and TA 100 with or without S9 metabolic activation in higher dose.
