Peyami Safa and his place in Turkish detective novel tradition

This study that took shape on the police, examines the detective books written by Peyami Safa, who was a part of detective literature from 1924 to 1960 and brought the character of 'Cingöz Recai' to Turkish detective literature, under the pen name 'Server Bedi'. The fictional features of the author's books in the scope of the study and, accordingly, their place in Turkish detective literature is evaluated. The study consists of four main sections. The first section examines Peyami Safa's life and literary personality. The second section addresses the definition of the detective novel genre and its historical development in Turkish and world literature. The third section, which includes the main purpose of the study, examines his detective novels under the subheadings of introduction, summary, cast of characters, crime and fiction, and focuses on the important characters and structure he brought to Turkish detective literature. The last section covers the prominent women and nationalism issues in his works. Within the scope of this study, the 2019-2024 editions of the books signed by Server Bedi, the first editions of which were published between 1924-1940, belonging to Ötüken Publications were taken as basis. The books in question were categorized by the publishing house as "Cingöz Recai'nin Harikulade Sergüzeştleri", "Çekirge Zehra'nın Harikaları", "Tilki Leman'ın Harikulade Maceraları" and "Kartal İhsan'ın Maceraları". Accordingly, "Cingöz Recai'nin Harikulade Sergüzeştleri" includes 13 books, including a total of 52 dime stories and 9 single books. There are 8 stories in the "Çekirge Zehra'nın Harikaları" series and 5 stories in the "Tilki Leman'ın Harikulade Maceraları" series. The "Kartal İhsan'ın Maceraları" series includes 10 stories. In the study limited to 9 novels and 75 ten-bit stories in the detective-adventure genre, the works were examined comprehensively by using the text analysis method. In this context, the characteristic features of the author's selected detective works were tried to be reflected in a wide range and Server Bedi's place in Turkish detective literature was revealed.
