Abstract (EN)
The present study aims to examine the impact of anionic and cationic polyacrylamide and tire chips considered as microplastics, on a sand-bentonite mixture consisting of 85% sand and 15% bentonite. The objective of this investigation is to assess the influence of different concentrations of polyacrylamide (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) and tire chips (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%) on the engineering characteristics of soil, measured by Atterberg limits and Proctor tests. This thesis examines the effects of polyacrylamide and tire chip concentrations on the previously listed essential parameters by treating the sand-bentonite mixture. Additionally, the Proctor test is performed to evaluate the compaction properties of soil, with the aim of examining the ideal moisture content and maximum dry density of the modified sand-bentonite mixture. This examination facilitates the identification of optimal compaction parameters and the subsequent assessment of the soil's stability and strength. The experimental methodology consists of the preparation of diverse soil samples with varying proportions of polyacrylamide and tire chips. The mentioned specimens were subjected to Atterberg limits and Proctor tests in accordance with established procedures. The process of data analysis involves the comparison of outcomes derived from the altered mixtures with those of the control samples. Test results indicated that both anionic and cationic polyacrylamide and tire chip addition leaded to decrease in maximum dry unit weight, increase in optimum water content and plasticity index and decrease in liquid limit. The highest difference due to the additive addition was obtained with 2% anionic polyacrylamide by dry mass. When compared with no addition, maximum dry unit weight decreased from 1.76 to 1.65 gf/cm optimum water content increased from 16 to 18.2%, plasticity index increased from 14 to 19% and liquid limit decreased from 53 to 43% due to 2% anionic polyacrylamide addition. This study will clarify how polyacrylamide and tire chips influence the engineering properties of a sand-bentonite mixture. This study can help civil engineers and geotechnical engineers understand how suggested additives might improve soil quality.
