Importance of polyphony in the piano education

Abstract (EN)

(Extract) This research, that is about importance of polyphony in the piano education, is prepared as a post-graduate thesis for K.T.Ü., Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Fine Arts, Music Education Main Science Branch. In this research, polyphony examinated by the part of historical development and investigated that, which composers, and how much they contributed in this development period. Besides it aimed to define that piano educators who works in Turkey's Music Main Science Branches Fine Art Departments of Education Faculties, how much pay attention to polyphony in the piano education and which polyphonic works in which level they use. Historical and questionare methods are applied for this research. The research's dimensions are created by scanning the literature in the area of historical development of polyphony that started in churches and composers that served to this area and prepared polyphonic works and J.S. Bach that was born in 18. century in Germany who took the polyphony to the climax point. Piano educators who have worked in 2001-2002 education and instruction period almost in all of our country in the Education Faculties Music Main Science Branches of Fine Art Departments (13 Faculties ), are formed this research's universe. The interpretations about this research, statisticly analized by considering the frequency and percentage of tables, which are connected with 6 main problems. The interpretations belonging to discovery made with the piano educators' s answers to questionares which formed our research's universe. The research about the importance of polyphony in the piano education is resulted as follows: It is proved that %46.49 of piano educators who work at Education Faculties Fine Arts Department, Music Education Main Science Branches in 2001-2002 education and insrtuction period, exactly don't know what polyphpny is and %86.4 of piano educators agreed that J.S. Bach is the greatest polyphony master. Besides, most of the piano educators agreed that Bach's polyphonic works are very important in the piano VIIeducation, but the importance of them may change on work to work. Most common polyphonic works which use in the piano education, are Menuets, Inventions with Double Parts, Inventions with Three Parts, Small Prelude-Fuges, 48 Prelud-Fuges For Well Designed Keyboard. Also with this research it is proved that %88.37 of piano educators have a common opinion that polyphonic works have a great roll in the piano education for understanding more than one part. Vffl
