Postmodernizm and feminism: An analysis through the ideas of Seyla Benhabib

The concept of postmodernism is defined in many different ways. While some see postmodernism as a continuation of modernism, others see it as a break with modernity. In this period, difference and pluralism come to the fore. Feminism, as one of the popular concepts of the postmodern era, advocates equal rights and opportunities between women and men. However, it also states that women and men have different characteristics and that these differences should be taken into account. Postmodern feminism, on the other hand, emphasizes the unique differences of each gender. This approach criticizes the notion of a single female or male figure and rejects gender stereotypes imposed under the name of universality. In this study, while discussing the development of the feminist approach within the framework of the concept of postmodernism, an evaluation is made through the views of Seyla Benhabib, who gives place to the discussions of these two phenomena in the academic world. The reason why Seyla Benhabib's views are analyzed is that, unlike other thinkers working on this subject, despite her perspective that sees the postmodern approach as the death of human, history and metaphysics, she deals with these three concepts from two different perspectives in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. Benhabib characterizes postmodern feminism as an "uneasy alliance" and emphasizes that feminists should reject these strong postmodernist theses and adopt weaker and less paralyzing interpretations. Benhabib does not have a positive attitude towards feminism's relationship with postmodernism. By focusing on issues such as the subject, grand narratives and rationality, she creates a dialog between weak and strong postmodernist claims and feminist perspectives. This relationship, however, offers only a strategic solidarity. Alongside institutional justice and political struggles against the oppression of normative claims, postmodernism's skeptical and subversive stance provides new energy, but this energy can also have a negative impact.
