Abstract (EN)

This study has been prepared as a master's degree thesis at Batman University Social Sciences Department of Painting Art. By searching artists and their works under the title of depression in this study, the creativity aspect that depression has added to art has been investigated, and collections have been created from artists life stories. The depressive aspect of art, its reflections on life, the lives of artists struggling to deal with some difficulties faced, and the psychic trauma they have added to their works as a result of these experiences have always been discussed. In the face of such a situation, artists' facing with many symptoms such as unhappiness, desperation, pessimism, loneliness, sorrow, not taking pleasure from life, even attempts to commit suicide creates the core of this study. Accordingly in the first chapter of the thesis, the definition of depression and its psychodynanmics have been emphasized, and with psychoanalytic viewpoint many different views have been mentioned, and the starting point of depression, mental disorders and situations leading to these mental disorders have been explained. In the second chapter under title of depression and art, artists struggle with their egos and how the traumatic events they experienced affected their works directly or indirectly have been stressed. In addition, by giving examples from famous thinkers, writers, composers, poets, sculptors and artists having experienced big problems as children, works of artists addressing anhedonia, pain, misery, depression have been searched, and in conjunction with these studies information of their live stories has been given. In the third chapter, within the context of art and depression, applied art training with hospitalized patients in psychiatry service has been carried out and revealed, and how these patients felt while drawing painting has been observed. In the last chapter, there are researcher's pictures related to the topic and their analyses.
