Seasonal and temporal distribution of some pollutants of Rize coast

To investigate seasonal and spatial distribution of pollutants from marine and terrestrial activities, water samples taken from eight different stations located on Rize Port and off coast of Rize between November 2009 and October2010.For this purpose the values of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, turbidity, total suspended solids, alkalinity, phenol, anionic detergent, oil and grease, cadmium, iron, copper and zinc were measured. The values of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and turbidity on the surface water were ranged between 9,17-27,44 °C, 7,28-10,90 mg/L, 7,79-8,51, 15,43-17,68 ppt and 14,5-20,20 NTU, respectively. The maximum values of total suspended solids, alkalinity, phenol, anionic detergent, oil and grease, cadmium, iron, copper, zinc and lead, were found to be 18,72 mg/L, 185 mg/L, 14,21 µg/L, 28,80 µg/L, 102,90 mg/L, <5 ppb, 42 ppb, 16 ppb, 71 ppb, 23 ppb, respectively. Based on maximum concentration levels of contaminants observed in the present study, it can be concluded that none of the pollutant except for phenol, copper, oil and grease values were exceed general marine water quality criteria, defined by general sea water quality standards in Water Contamination Regulations.In conclusion, seasonal and spatial distributions of pollutants were found to be irregular.
