The political history of Rize (1923-1950)

The aim of this study is to reveal the formation of the political organizations in Rize between 1923-1950, the work of the government and the reflection of it on the city. The study is composed of an introduction and three parts in which the political activities during the 27 years of one party period and the social, economic and cultural effects are the main subjects. In the introduction part, the temperament, standards of judgment, social, economic and cultural conditions of the locals are presented in general terms. In addition, the period before 1923 was mentioned; some information was given about the methodology and chapters of the study. In the first chapter, the organization of CHP (Republican People's Party) in Rize and its towns, its organizations in the towns of Çoruh and the structuring of SCF (Free Republican Party) and DP (Democratic Party) are presented. In addition, the problems of Rize in the same period, the attitude of the government towards these problems and the reflections of some social revolutions on the city are depicted. Finally, the 1946 and 1950 elections are included. In the second chapter, Rize Türk Ocakları (Turkish Societies) and Halkevi (Community Centre) are mentioned. The last part includes information about the results of eight general elections and two by-elections between 1923-1950, and about the biographies of the elected deputies. In the conclusion section, an evaluation was carried out in light of the available information and it was seen that CHP could not attain success in Rize. It has been concluded that it was caused by the fact that a significant part of the population mainly objected to the revolutions in the social area and a significant improvement had not existed in the economic situation of the province for many years.
