Özet (EN)

Evaluation of hematological parameters in pediatric patients who followed by Rotavirus Gastroenteritis Objectives: Gastroenteritis is one of the important public health problems which can cause morbidity and mortality in childhood. Rotavirus is the most frequent cause of infectious acute gastroenteritis in under the five years of age. Even though improved serological methods for definitive diagnosis, this method may not always be easy to reach. The aim of this study is to obtain the parameters to help serological laboratory tests in the diagnosis of rotavirus gastroenteritis. Materials and methods: We enrolled 1539 patients whose ages were between the 4 months and 18 year, admitted to Adiyaman University School of Medicine Education and Research Hospital's pediatric outpatient clinics, pediatric service, pediatric emergency services with acute gastroenteritis. Patients were divided into two groups as rotavirus positive and negative. Demographic data and hematological parameters were recorded for all patients. Neutrophil / lymphocyte, platelet / lymphocytes, basophils / lymphocyte, eosinophil / lymphocyte and monocyte / lymphocyte ratios were calculated. Data were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package For Social Sciences) program. Results: WBC, Hgb, Htc, MCV, PDW averages and absolute lymphocyte count, absolute neutrophil count, Neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio, platelets / lymphocyte ratio and eosinophil / lymphocyte ratios were found lower in rotavirüs positive group. In ROC analysis, we receive 14.95 cut-off value for PDW, calculated as 61,9 % sensitivity and 55,1 % specifity. Conclusion: Several hematological parameters were influenced in rotavirus gastroenteritis. RBC, Hgb, Htc, MCV, PDW, neutrophil count, neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio, platelets / lymphocyte ratio and eosinophil / lymphocyte ratio was found significantly lower, lymphocyte counts and platelet counts averages were found significantly higher in rotavirus positive patients. These results could be supportive for rotavirus gastroenteritis. Keywords: Rotavirus, Gastroenteritis, Childhood, Laboratory markers
