Investigation of the relationship between strength and durabi̇li̇ty of the trunk muscle with functional parameters in healthy young individuals

Abstract (EN)

Low strength and endurance of the muscles in the "core" region cause excessive physiological stress on the passive structures of the spine, which can cause pain throughout the other structures of the body and decrease functional performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between strength and endurance of "core"muscles and functional parameters in healthy young individuals. 123 healthy young individuals with mean age of 21.04±1.691 years were included in the study to investigate the relationship between muscle strength and endurance of the trunk region and functional parameters. With in study demographic data, "core" muscles endurance and strength evaluations, functional parameters evaluating performance, emotional state, quality of life, physical activity level were recorded. "Core" muscles strength were measured modified push-ups test, sit-ups test; "core" muscles endurance evaluations included lateral bridge test, Sorenson test, trunk flexor endurance tests. For the evaluations of functional parameters sit-reach test, M.Quadriceps Femoris flexibility test, vertical jump test, bilateral Squat test, step down test, forward jump test on one leg. Emotional status was assessed by Beck Depression Questionnaire, quality of life was assessed by Short Form 36 (SF 36), and physical activity level was assessed by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Modified push-ups test, which is one of the "core" strength tests, has a positive weak correlation with performance tests except flexibility tests (r=0.188-0.508 p<0.05). As a result of statistical analysis, it was found that "core" endurance tests were positively correlated with vertical jump test, Squat test and step down test (r=0.176-0.385 p<0.05). While there was no correlation between "core"endurance and quality of life, there was a positive significant correlation between modified push-ups test and quality of life (r=0.183-0.250 p<0.05). There was a positive significant correlation between "core"endurance tests, modified push-ups test and physical activity (r=0.257-0.324 p<0.05). As a result of our study, a significant relationship was found between the strength, endurance of the "core"muscles and functional parameters. We think that strength and endurance exercises of "core"muscles should be taken into consideration in increasing functional parameters.
