The effect of coastal urban arrangements on social memory: The case of Trabzon

Urban regulations are implemented today to transform cities and address the needs arising from urbanization. While these regulations aim to meet urban needs, they also have significant impacts on urban identity, culture, and social memory. The identity of cities is directly linked to cultural heritage and social memory. Urban interventions are among the key factors shaping this identity, playing a crucial role in how individuals connect with the city and how social memory is formed. This study examines the impact of urban regulations along the Trabzon coastline on social memory. A qualitative research method with a phenomenological design was employed. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview technique. The study is based on criterion sampling, with the sample group consisting of individuals aged 65 and above residing in the Arsin and Yomra districts. The research was limited to 20 participants. Findings indicate that physical changes along the coastline have significantly transformed traditional usage patterns and cultural rituals. Consequently, shifts have been observed in the local population's memory of urban space and perception of identity.
