An analysis of Abidin Dino in the context of arts and cultural management

Throughout history, art has been conceptualized in various forms and definitions. In its broadest sense, it may be regarded as a product of human imagination, as well as the expression of emotions and thoughts governed by aesthetic concerns. While art is fundamentally an individual creative process, it simultaneously emerges within and is shaped by the socio-cultural and historical context of its time. Artworks, therefore, are inseparable from the cultural, political, religious, social, and economic structures of the societies in which they are produced. If an artist bears responsibility toward their time, space, and society, it follows that society and prevailing political authorities equally bear certain responsibilities toward the artist. Within this framework, the position of the artist, both in general and specifically within the discipline of arts management, assumes critical importance. This study aims to investigate the interrelation between art, the artist, and the concept of arts and culture management by focusing on the artistic philosophy of Abidin Dino. It explores how the socio-political conditions of his time influenced his role within the field of cultural management. Dino is examined not solely as a painter and caricaturist, but as a multidisciplinary artist whose intellectual and political engagements significantly shaped his artistic production. Particular emphasis is placed on the ways in which his political identity and socialist worldview informed his approach to art, as well as the manner in which he negotiated the challenges of exile and censorship. His interactions with political authority and their implications for his artistic practice are also scrutinized. The study further evaluates the impact of contemporary cultural policies and institutional constraints on Dino's artistic trajectory. In addition, the research explores his contributions to the tradition of social realist art, along with a biographical overview encompassing his private life, family background, formative years, artistic career, major works, affiliations with artistic collectives, and posthumous exhibitions. The analysis situates Abidin Dino as a central figure in Turkish modern art and evaluates his enduring influence through the lens of critical art theory and cultural policy discourse.
