Özet (EN)

This thesis investigates the multidimensional nature of art therapy, focusing on its use as both a means of artistic expression and a tool for psychological healing. The primary objective of the study is to explore the definition, historical development, psychological foundations, and educational implications of art therapy in a comprehensive manner. Art is interpreted beyond its aesthetic value—as a transformative medium that facilitates emotional expression, makes unconscious content visible through symbols, and supports mental balance and self-awareness. The theoretical framework of the study begins with classical definitions of art by philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, and extends to modern theories by Kant and contemporary scholars. The research further analyzes psychoanalytic perspectives on art, particularly Freud's interpretation of art as a projection of unconscious desires and Jung's emphasis on archetypal symbols. The views of other influential psychological theorists on the nature and function of art are also examined in detail. The thesis elaborates on the types of art forms and techniques used in art therapy practices, and presents various application methods through case-based examples. Moreover, it offers a comparative analysis of art therapy education in Europe and Turkey, emphasizing institutional structures, legal frameworks, and curricular developments. While art therapy is well-integrated into Western psychology and education systems, it is still emerging in Turkey, although it has shown promising growth, especially within guidance counseling, psychological services, and special education domains. In conclusion, art therapy is presented as an effective, creative, and holistic tool for both personal development and clinical intervention. Within this framework, art is not merely a product of aesthetic interest, but a dynamic and healing force that plays a transformative role in education, psychology, and social development.
