A research on using the cross-stitch technique as an artistic action

Cross stitch is an elegant and attractive type of traditional embroidery that has been done since ancient times. To date, no historical or archaeological findings have been found to show exactly when cross stitch was created, probably because societies took their own handicrafts and cultures related to this art with them in the regions they dominated over time. In this sense, cross-stitched products, which are undeniably included in handicrafts, are considered as important products that reflect the lifestyle of every society and have different functions in society. Cross-stitching is seen as an action that has been passed down from generation to generation and that young girls who are just starting to grow up can learn quickly once they start holding the needle correctly. It is important in terms of cultural history with the cultural messages it gives us and the motifs observed in the cross-stitch embroidery, which is the indispensable material of dowry chests in Anatolia today as it was yesterday. Although there are variations in the patterns of cross-stitched works, an intercultural interaction manifests itself with the spread of technology and communication tools and therefore the effect of globalization. Cross-stitching has been used in intercultural relations throughout history; It was used in brides' dowries, household items and clothes. Today, it is also used as a tool in various artistic activities. It would not be wrong to say that cross-stitch, which has other functions in addition to its economic functions, is a cultural wealth. The main purpose of the study is the effects of cultural change as a result of globalization on cross-stitch culture. In this study; The effects of artistic change and search on cross-stitch culture were examined and information was given about cross-stitch examples applied in different cultures. The findings regarding the use of cross-stitch technique as an artistic action were examined from the perspective of designers and the place and importance of cross-stitch in interdisciplinary use was expressed.
