A review on the historical novels and period novels of Sevinç Çokum

History is the sum of realities based on societies' common past. It is a compilation of experiences of societies and nations and it is also a part of their cultures. History is a science based on experiences. Literature is a social science which is open to interpretation that is based on reality and fictionalising of this reality, providing the transfer of societies' memories. Historical reality differs from reality of literature. Therefore, the way in whitch a historian and a litterateur handle the reality is different from each other. Historical novels which are composed by fictionalising the historical reality, even if their topics are based on history, differ from history writting in terms of filtering reality through a fiction. The emergence of the historical novel has been after many social and political developments. The fear of being forgotten and the passion for knowing have pushed humans into searching their past origins and with the acceptance that history is open to interpretation, the interest in history has increased. It is language that provides the transfer of history. In this aspect literary writers have included the history in their wide range of subjects. In Turkish literature, with the appearance of novel genre, novels about history have been written. Sevinç Çokum, one of the female writers of the Republican Period has also written novels about history. This study consist of four parts. In the first part, the subject of historical reality and the reality of novel are emphasized and the journey of historical novel through world literature and Turkish literature is examined. In the second part, the information about the life of Sevinç Çokum, her works and her literary personality are given. In the third part, 5 historical novels of Sevinç Çokum and in the fourth part, her three period novels are examined in terms of the material and technical elements of the novel.
