Abstract (EN)
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide. Identifying nicotine dependence plays a crucial role in planning cessation treatments, preventing smoking-related mortality and morbidity, and shaping tobacco control policies. It was aimed to contribute to the literature by conducting the validity and reliability analyses of the Turkish version of the self-administered Cigarette Dependence Scale- 12 (CDS-12) developed to assess cigarette dependence. The study was conducted between 01.07.2024 and 01.10.2024 with 330 randomly selected individuals over the age of 18 who visited Adıyaman University Training and Research Hospital and declared that they were smokers. All participants were administered a sociodemographic data form prepared by the researchers and the Turkish version of the CDS-12. The collected data were entered into a statistical software package, and validity and reliability analyses were conducted. During the validity and reliability analyses, one item was excluded from each analysis, and the Turkish adaptation was named the Sigara Bağımlılık Ölçeği-10 (SBÖ-10). The cronbach alpha value of the CDS-10 was 0,928. The findings of this study indicate that CDS-10, which is a brief, valid, and self-administered scale covering criteria for nicotine dependence, can be used by physicians in clinical practice, allows individuals to assess their own dependence levels, and can serve as a useful tool in future studies examining smoking addiction.
