The effect of poetry reading activities on secondary school 5th grade students' speaking skills

The purpose of this study is to see what effect poetry reading activities have on the development of speaking skills in 5th grade secondary school students. The research was conducted under the themes of "Nature and the Universe" and "Our National Culture'' and "Citizenship". The research model is an experimental study with a pre-test, post-test control group. The study was conducted in two fifth-grade branches of the SunguVakfbank Girls' Regional Boarding Secondary School in Sungu, Muş province. The experimental and control groups in the study were determined using a random assignment method during the secondary semester of the 2021-2022 Academic year. The research was carried out with 30 students for 12 weeks in the Turkish and Reading Skills course. The "Effective Speaking Scale" developed by ÇintaşYıldız and Yavuz was used to collect research data (2012). The speaking topics were chosen based on the opinions of expert teachers. The SPSS-22 statistical program was used to analyze the pre-test and post-test measurements of the experimental and control group students' speaking skills. Parametric tests were used because the research data showed normal distribution. As a result of the research, it was determined that students in the classroom where poetry reading activities were used performed better than students in the classroom where activities within the framework of the current Turkish textbook were used, and the scores in the sub-dimensions of speaking skills were higher, with a statistically significant difference. ix Keywords:Activity, poetry reading, speaking skills.
