Social studies teachers' opinions and practices on the value of justice

The concept of justice is a very important concept for both individuals and society. The aim of this research is to reveal the views and practices of social studies teachers regarding the value of justice. The phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as a method in the research. The study group of the research consists of social studies teachers working in secondary schools in the center and districts of Afyonkarahisar province in the 2023-2024 academic year. The research data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The data obtained in the research were analyzed in accordance with the descriptive analysis method. The findings were tabulated and presented with frequencies and supported with direct quotes. When the teachers' definitions of the concept of justice were examined from the findings obtained as a result of the research, it was seen that the teachers mostly defined the concept of justice as compliance with rights and law. It was concluded that in the teaching of the concept of justice, teachers mostly taught the concept of justice in the form of being a role model for the student, creating a fair learning environment, and telling sample events. It was determined that family is very important among external factors other than education and training in the teaching of the value of justice, that the first foundations of the value of justice are laid in the family, but many families pose an obstacle to the teaching of this value. It has been revealed that television and social media content also have a negative effect on children learning the value of justice, and that these media will contribute to teaching the value of justice, provided that their content is regulated. Suggestions regarding family education, regulation of social media and television content, and the addition of an independent course on justice to the curriculum have been emphasized in order to better convey the value of justice to new generations.
