The opinions of social science teachers on social media and values education: A qualitative research on the case of Bitlis-Ahlat

Teachers working in schools and working for the future of society have an important position in the conscious use of social media and in guiding young people in this regard. The aim of the study is to evaluate the opinions and suggestions of social studies teachers about social media and values education. In this context, data were collected by semi-structured interview technique from 15 social studies teachers working in secondary schools in Bitlis/Ahlat in the 2020-2021 academic year. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis method, one of the qualitative analysis techniques. The views and expectations of teachers on social media and its effects on values education have been evaluated within the scope of their own fields, impact areas of social media, and correct orientation of students and students. According to the findings obtained after the analysis; teachers are not only in their field; It has been understood that social media has an effect on all social and personal values and that all people using social media should be attentive to the common consciousness.
