An investigation of the relationship between social media use and asocial behaviors from a social work perspective

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between social media use and asocial behavior of individuals between the ages of 18-55 and evaluate it from a social work perspective. For the research, a total of 20 people, 10 men and 10 women, were interviewed in depth. An interview form containing 24 semi structured questions was used as a data collection tool in the study. The questions were prepared by the researcher and answers were sought by asking the participants. The data was obtained through face to face interviews. The data collected by the researcher was analyzed and evaluated with the Maxqda program, a qualitative data analysis software. The answers given by the participant group to the questions were shortened by the researcher, preserving the original views and without distorting the real version. The increase in social media use caused most of the participants to move away from face to face communication and experience problems with antisociality. It has been observed that as the use of social media increases, participants experience antisocial problems such as decreasing their participation in social activities, feeling alone in society, experiencing a lack of self-expression, feeling psychologically bad, and deterioration in their social relationships. The increased use of social media in society causes the communication of individuals in the society to decrease and their mental health to deteriorate. Social workers play a role in increasing the problem-solving capacity of the individual and liberating and empowering individuals. In this regard, it is aimed to increase the well-being of the individual, family and society in the measures and interventions to be taken in the field of social services in protecting the mental health of the society.
