A space reading through abstraction and emphaty theory: The case of Sandaklar mosque

The purpose of this study is to analyse the theory of Abrtaction And Empahty (Einfühlung) that sheds light on important implications for art history in the field of architecture. This theory, which takes the disciplines of architecture and psychology to the common denominator, aims to present a different, original and rich method to both architectural reading studies and academic studies. In order to realize this aim, it is planned to examine, re-read and conceptually analyze the interpretations of architecture and art in Worringer's work titled Abstraction and Emphaty written in the 20th century. The main point of the thesis is to reveal that these concepts, which were guiding in the past, can be read through today's architecture. Islamic architecture, which is the sample area of the study, has been analysed with a different dimension and analysed through theory; The different style of Sancaklar Mosque, which is one of the 21st century mosques, has been researched depending on the theory within the scope of the thesis. Regarding the purposes identified above, the study consists of five chapters; The General Information, The Achieved Studies, The Findings, The Discussions, The Results and The Proposals. In the General Information, the purpose, scope and method of the study and the general informations about abstraction and empahty (einfühlung) theory has been emphasized. In the Achieved Studies, the discourses of the theory in the context of the architectural discipline were analysed and the concepts obtained by the data analysis method and the content reading method were determined. The concepts obtained were examined through the sample area of Sancaklar Mosque. In the Findings, short results have been given under the concept titles of the case of Sancaklar Mosque. In the Discussions, it has been emphasized that the findings obtained have been evaluated and formed within the scope of the research. In the Results, special information concerning the analyses and findings carried out has been given; Proposals section, views concerning the scope to which the study can extend in the future have been described.
